The San Jose Sharks, you unreliable friend

Let's take a moment to consider the San Jose sharks, the enigma of the NHL, the consistently inconsistent team you love to hate. All year long they dazzle, they amaze, they win! Shockingly this happens more than one or two years, but more often than not as of recent history. Anyways, so what exactly happens once we reach playoff time? Is it the wear and tear on the players from competing so hard during the year? Is it nerves? Is it coaching? Is it the fans? It very likely boils down to a combination of a lot of little things. So why is it a huge shock that the Sharks have now moved on to the Western finals, and so soon? I mean we don't even know who they will be playing against (ok, ok, we all know that it will be against the Chicago Blackhawks) and already the Sharks are good to go.

If it's a matter of nerves that keeps the Sharks from accomplishing that which has yet to happen for their franchise, a Stanley cup victory, then what makes us think that this year might be a little different for them, that's right likely nothing. Now, the players will have even more time to sit around and worry about failing or falling short before they play the Hawks. Will this be the year that history is made? I truly believe that a Western team will win the cup. If its the Hawks, then the longest running cup drought of the league ends, and the Leafs take over that honour. If its the Sharks, then they win their first cup. The east? Probably wrongly, but I can't even think a about them right now.

Anyways, I have come to think of the Sharks as that friend who loves to dream and plan with you but never really comes through, but you always hold out a little hope that just once they will come through. Joe Thorton, is this the year that you miss showing up for the Olympics, but show up to the finals?
